I'm with you on the Pettigrew thing...that's something I've thought about a lot since I reread all the books in anticipation for the final one. While I can't remember the exact passage, I think something about Pettigrew saving the day eventually is also mentioned in the 4th book. JKR doesn't just randomly throw in things like that, she's all about the foreshadowing, and I think, in this final book, Pettigrew might come back to the good side, esepcially since he's always been treated like shit by the Death Eaters.

Also, about the owls, I've wondered the same thing. I suppose it's possible that Sirius only wanted to be found by owls bearing Harry's letters and that, perhaps, due to some sort of magic, Ministry of Magic owls could not reach him.

I'm very with you on the Snape thing. I believe pretty strongly that Dumbledore turns out to be right about him. I could even see Dumbledore sacrificing himself via Snape in order to place Snape in better position (Dumbledore knows that Harry has to be the one to end the Voldemort saga, and as such his life isn't very valuable. He's also alluded to this fact in the cave, when he offers to drink the elixir because Harry has potentially so many more years in front of him) to betray Voldemort. Furthermore, Harry has an uncanny knack for being completely wrong whenever he strongly suspects someone, especially when he has personal reasons for doing so. Examples of this include Harry suspecting Snape of trying to get the Sorcerer's Stone and suspecting Malfoy of opening the Chamber of Secrets.
